It might be all the pumpkin spice in the air, but we’re excited to share some tips about getting engaged!
When is the best time to get engaged?
If you’re planning on proposing to your significant other in the foreseeable future, there are a few things to consider before you decide on the right time to pop the question. We’ve seen that Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day are actually very popular holidays for when couples get engaged and December is the most popular month for marriage proposals. There’s certainly no right or wrong time to propose or to announce your engagement, but it might be beneficial to think about some of the details we’ve highlighted below prior to the engagement.
Make it a family affair.
Do you visit your families during the holidays, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s? If so, you will definitely want to share such wonderful news with them as soon as possible. You can plan to propose with your family and friends surrounding you to witness the wonderful occasion, or set it up shortly before the holidays so the news is fresh conversation for when you do pay them a visit. The holidays can be super romantic and bring heart-warming sentimentality to the special day, so make sure it’s a memorable story that you’ll want to tell over and over again.
Give yourself time to plan.
The latter half of the calendar year is a great time to get engaged if you have your heart set on a spring or summer wedding. Getting engaged before the end of winter allows time to research, plan, and book your venue(s) and vendors for your special day. Spend time over your holiday break with friends and family to help you get ideas for your wedding’s location, theme, colors and menu. Check out our Find A Vendor page where you can find all kinds of vendors and services that you’ll need for your wedding.
Put some money in the bank.
Getting engaged during the Fall or Winter not only gives you time to plan your spring or summer wedding, but it will also give your friends and family time to plan and save up some moolah. It’s especially helpful if you are planning a destination wedding or if you have out of town guests. Check out our Wedding Destination and Venue Books for beautiful location options and wedding style inspiration.
We hope these tips are useful in helping you plan your engagement and would love to hear from you!

If you didn’t already know it, there are tons of options when it comes to your wedding cake. Infinite choices of flavor, color, design, size and shape. You name it, it's out there! Here are a few ideas to consider.
You’ve Got Great Taste!
The flavor of your wedding cake can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be. It can get overwhelming with all of the choices and you may not want to taste every single concoction, especially when there’s a dress you’ll be wanting to fit into on your special day! POPSUGAR has compiled a useful flavors chart that breaks down flavor combinations to help guide you with your decision. Be sure to also get help from your Cake Designer if you are working with one to ensure a satisfactory outcome. Check out the chart here!
Raise The Stakes…With Cake!
With all of the different styles of cake design out there, you are bound to find something that suits your fancy. Here’s a little inspiration to get you going.
Au Naturel The Naked Cake is quite a popular style these days. This style keeps your cake looking fresh and simple and works great with the addition of fresh fruit or real flowers that go along with your wedding theme.
Metallic Flare Metallic accents on your cake can create an elegant and upscale feel to your cake. Hints of gold, silver, copper, rose gold, you name it! If you like a multi-tiered cake, mix and match a solid metallic tier with simpler tiers for extra oomph.
Painterly Strokes If you and your significant other have an appreciation for creative talent, show it off with a hand painted cake. Use a sentimental scene or keep it abstract for a more modern look.
Beauty is on the Inside Who says all the fancy stuff has to be on the outside of your cake? Give your cake several layers of different colors to create an Ombre look or coordinate the layers with your wedding theme.
Unique Alternatives There’s no law that says your wedding has to serve Wedding Cake. If you’re not exactly a fan of cake, make it a lovely display of macarons, cupcakes, cookies, donuts, pies, even cheese!
Autumn is a beautiful time of year for weddings. We gathered inspiration from all things Fall and put them all right here, so that you may be inspired too!
Utilizing the great outdoors for all its beauty is especially romantic during the fall. Rich saturated colors of the falling leaves, pumpkins, berries and the setting sun create the perfect ambience. Floral arrangements can be as creative as you want, and even unconventional. Using pinecones, berries and gourds in your bouquets, centerpieces and other arrangements can give a natural sophistication to your wedding.
Know what’s in season.
There are several selections of seasonal flowers that are available in the fall. Asiatic Lily, Celosia, Dahlia, Orange Gerbera, and Purple Alstroemeria to name just a few. It helps to know what’s in season to make your design ideas go smoothly and without disappointment.
Baby, it’s cold outside.
Outdoor Autumn Weddings can get a little chilly, so make sure your bridesmaids and guests are warm and cozy by giving them each their own pashmina or shawl that coordinate with your wedding theme. They’ll be fashionable and warm.
Bump up the drama.
Autumn days turn quickly into Autumn nights. Be prepared with candles in your centerpieces, or use string lights strewn about to create an ethereal glow. Thats lovely and practical!
Make it a fruitful day.
Harvest season for apples are generally in the fall, and what better way to thank your guests than giving out seasonally appropriate and delicious candied apples as wedding favors.
There is something special about military weddings. The ceremonial attire, traditions of the archway of swords (sabers or rifles), and time-honored military wedding venues. The beautiful wedding parties adorned in the ceremonial attire including the men's uniform with white gloves give the special day an appeal of greatness.
The Saber Arch is a common tradition, raising swords to create an arch and walkway for the bride and groom to walk through. "Saber" bearers approach the center aisle after the ceremony and the swords are raised in their right hands above the couple, signifying a safe entry into the bride and groom's new lives.

If you've got the jitters or need help getting started on your wedding vows, Sandra Lynch has given us some pointers on preparing the perfect words for your special day.
1. Cat’s got my tongue!
Lots of people fear to speak in public, but I have never heard of anyone dying from it.
Write down a few simple things that you want to say. Not too cheesy and not too serious.
To curb your fear, use these tips to help you:
Big breath in, hold for 2-5 seconds, then release slowly.
Take your time, pause when needed, and breathe again.
2. This is serious stuff!
Getting married and making it work is serious stuff, but your ceremony…not so much.
It can be fun and not too mushy. Here are a few lines from a fun groom:
3. I am brain–dead!
Are you planning to memorize your vows?
With all of the stress of the day, why do that?! Ask your Officiant to put your vows on a card. You can take the printed cards from your wedding ceremony and put them into your wedding album, frame them, or even have your Officiant email them to the photographer or videographer to enhance your memories.
Finally, remember, your vows should be special, not stressful!
